Shabek Lab – Diversity Statement

As an immigrant and the son of a Holocaust survivor (1933-2011 ,צבי שבק ✡), diversity, equality, and inclusion are woven into the very fabric of my identity and life experience. My perspective is deeply rooted in both my cultural heritage and my family’s history. Growing up, I heard numerous harrowing stories of survival, which served as a constant reminder of the atrocities that can occur when hatred and prejudice are allowed to flourish.

For me, diversity is not just a concept; it’s a lived experience. It’s about acknowledging the rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and perspectives that make up our global community. It’s about ensuring that every individual is treated with the same dignity and opportunities. I am dedicated to actively advocating for diversity and inclusion in my personal and professional life.

I founded the Shabek Lab at UC Davis with diversity and inclusiveness as its core values. In the lab, we are dedicated to championing equality, equity, and mutual respect among all team members. We actively strive to create a space where everyone feels not only valued but also empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents.

It is my belief that by embracing our unique backgrounds and fostering an environment of acceptance, we can work towards a world where the lessons of the past are not forgotten, and where unity and empathy prevail over hatred and discrimination.
